About the coffee | Located in the southern highlands of Tanzania, the Ruvuma region encompasses the Mbinga District, situated near the eastern shores of Lake Nyasa. Known for its fertile soils derived from igneous rocks, this region is renowned as one of the primary coffee-producing districts among Tanzania’s twelve major coffee-producing areas.
Established in 2020, Namku Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society (Namku Amcos) is a coffee cooperative boasting 330 members, including 50 women. Notably, the cooperative operates its own washing station with advanced fermentation tanks and water channel infrastructure, ensuring efficient processing and enhanced capacity for coffee production.
The coffee is selectively picked, washed in a small station and then undergoes flotation to remove low-density fruits. Afterwards, cherries are pulped within 12 hours and fermented underwater for 24 to 48 hours.
The beans are dried on raised beds for approximately 14 days until their moisture content reaches 10-12%, followed by grading and sorting.
Namku Amcos prioritises environmental stewardship by minimising pollutant release, monitoring wastewater and reducing waste generation. They advocate for afforestation efforts, aiming to combat deforestation and promote sustainability. Their commitment to social responsibility extends to ensuring proper waste management and promoting eco-friendly practices for a healthier environment.
