About the coffee | Located in Northern Nicaragua, the San Juan del Rio Coco department offers an array of mountainous terrain ideal for growing coffee. The region is home to numerous mountain chains with peaks reaching heights of over 1700 metres above sea level. Its rivers eventually merge to form the Segovia River which provides a valuable source of water for the area.
It was there that the PROCAFE cooperative was founded in May 2011. The cooperative initially consisted of 32 associates and has now grown to include 165 colleagues. This diverse team comprises 56 women and 109 men, all working together harmoniously to ensure the smooth functioning of the cooperative, with the goal of empowering small-scale farmers and offering them more choices in terms of marketing their produce and reaching global markets.
The Café de San Juan coffee beans grow at altitudes ranging from 1300 to 2100 masl.
This particular coffee, organically certified, is a blend of Caturra, Yellow Catuaí, Red Catuaí,
Parainema and Bourbon. The cooperative processes their beans using the wet method
followed by patio drying.
PROCAFE promotes sustainable practices, including shade-grown coffee, crop diversification and environmental conservation, while supporting its members with technical assistance.
